Alaska AHEC Application

Welcome to the Alaska AHEC

The Alaska Area Health Education Center (Alaska AHEC) provides experiences for health professional students by placing them with our rural or underserved populations. This web site serves as a clearinghouse for those interested in obtaining such a rotation. We are particularly interested in hosting students who have ties to Alaska or are strongly considering working in Alaska upon completion of their program.

Each Alaska AHEC Center serves a distinct geographic area and has different resources and needs. The Clinical Rotation Coordinators from each Center work closely together to help place students. The Alaska AHEC Program Office helps support the southwest region which currently has no AHEC center. In general, each Center and the Program Office have a limited amount of funding to support students traveling to and from rotation sites and, in some cases, housing on site if needed. We support many types of clinical rotation students and work with several different programs and a variety of universities. The most common types of rotations include 4th year medical students, medical residents, dental students, pharmacy interns, physician assistant students and NP students. We are working to expand our rotations to therapy students, as well.

If you are interested in a particular geographic region of the state, we encourage you to contact the AHEC in that region, by visiting their page on this site. If you have no preference to a region, we encourage you to complete an application. Clinical Rotation Coordinators meet on a monthly basis to discuss applicants. In your initial contact, it is helpful for us to know of any ties you may have to our state or your interest in working in Alaska in the future.

We encourage you to visit the Frequently Asked Questions page before contacting us. An application for a rotation placement is available for download on the Application page.

Special Note: As of March 29, 2012 we are no longer accepting applications for 4th year medical student rotations for next fall/winter. We have recently had a dramatic increase in the number of applications we usually receive and many of the clinics we work with are either full through spring of 2013 or are no longer taking medical students beyond the Alaska programs they already work with. Although we cannot guarantee a placement, if you have direct ties to Alaska (Alaska resident or have family here), please feel free to apply.
